Doctor of Philosophy in any field demonstrates the highest level of achievement in the discipline. And obviously the graduates who achieve the degree will be able to demonstrate excellence in their pursuit of academic study in the selected field. However, Ph.D. Programs at Oxford Trent University is determined by the strengths of its academic programs, quality of its faculty, and breadth of its outreach opportunities. We, the Oxford Trent, offer several doctoral programs, though distance learning basis, that employ real-world applications and painstaking research toward supporting the substantial development of participants who can affect the future of Universities, Institutes, Industries, and Communities.
Program Design
The regular doctoral program at Oxford Trent University consists of two following parts:
The pre-dissertation stage
The dissertation stage
The objective of the pre-dissertation stage is to provide students with theoretical foundations and practices of the primary and supporting fields of research with a good command of relevant qualitative methods of research and analysis. The objective of dissertation stage is for the student to apply the theoretical and practical knowledge with analytical methods to the resolution of research program.
Admission Requirements
The minimum educational requirement for Doctoral Program at Oxford Trent University is a Master's Degree in the relevant field or equivalent.
Study Plan for Pre-Dissertation Stage
The study plan for Pre-Dissertation Stage is a description of how the student's educational interest and objective be pursued during enrollment in the Doctorate Program. Here, the university will emphasize each Participant on his/her theoretical knowledge. Courses of this stage will be selected as per the educational background, experience and major of the Participant. However, each course in this stage takes 3 credit hours to cover and is conducted in seminar form. This plan is unique in placing so much emphasis on the student's educational achievement in relation to longer-range personal and career goals. It tailors the doctoral student's interests as well as faculty requirements. Students are urged to be in-depth and innovative in their study and to confine planned activities to the independent research, publication, consulting, travel and teaching which if properly developed and presented, may be approved by the Committee on Doctoral Studies.
The Dissertation Stage
The objective of the dissertation stage is to demonstrate that the student has synthesized the knowledge gained during the pre-dissertation stage and is able to apply this knowledge to the resolution of a substantial problem. The dissertation stage consists of five major activates:
2 doctoral concentration seminars/papers
3 dissertation seminars
Research execution
The final dissertation approval
Each candidate is required to attend a final oral examination on the dissertation. This consists of external examiners, who are senior academics and experts in the field as well.
Curriculum
The Ph.D. Program at OTU consists of 60 hours of coursework and 30 hours of dissertation research. The coursework component is distributed as follows:
15 hours of business core courses (or equivalent)
12 hours of doctoral core courses, minimum
12 hours of quantitative courses, minimum
21 hours of electives, minimum
60 hours total coursework, minimum
Business Core: 15 hours
Recommended core:
Corporate Financial Management (3 credits)
Managerial Accounting (3 credits)
Managing Organizational Behavior (3 credits)
Marketing Strategy (3 credits)
Social Perspectives on the Business Enterprise (3 credits)
Doctoral Core: 12 hours minimum required
Students in all three tracks will enroll in Professional Development and Developing Effective Research Programs in Business.
Each track has at least three seminars (at least 9 total credit hours) specifically targeted to its area.
Quantitative Courses: 12 credit hours minimum
Finance track: 12 credit hours of econometrics offered by the Department of Economics
Management and Marketing track: 12 credit hours of quantitative analysis offered by the Department of Psychology.
Minor and Elective Courses: 21 credit hours, minimum
A minimum of 21 credit hours of elective courses that support their selected track and area of interest.
NB. It can be reduced by taking additional doctoral core courses beyond the 13 hour minimum.
Dissertation Research and Preparation – 30 credit hours
The program requires the submission of a dissertation, based on the participant's original research. During its preparation, the student will register for Dissertation Research and Direction.
Graduation Requirements
All coursework must be completed in accordance with the regulations of the Graduate School and the School of Business Administration, governing graduate scholarship and degrees.
Please note that students enrolled on a full-time basis must complete all requirements within six years of admission.
